I was still fairly new to [company] when I was doing a demo
at a hostesses house. I had my garden lantern on top of her antique breakfront, when I
decided I better move it to somewhere safer (you never know). So I put it on the
floor (where I knew it would be safe!) in front of her fireplace. It looked lovely. I was
burning a 3x5 cranberry candle in it and it looked great. Back then, my show was a mere 3
hours long. As I was packing up my things, I left the garden lantern for last. I picked up
the lantern off the floor and to my horror it had been dripping wax over the side for 3
hours! I was mortified to say the least. I quickly got on my knees and started to chip the
wax off her pale pink carpet. The wax had to be at least 1 inch thick through to the
padding.
There was no way it was coming off. I tried the iced cube trick, ironing it off, and
finally using a knife to slice it off, no use it was too thick. The hostess was pretty
gracious, but told me she wouldn't say anything to her husband till I left! I would have
to say that this took place in my 2nd month of business. I told her I would pay for
anything that needed to be done( there goes my profits for the evening). I drove home
telling myself my [company] career was over. The hostess had the carpet cleaned, they
removed all the wax, but the dye never came out. So she bought an oriental hearth rug for
in front of the fireplace, the alternative was to have the wall-to-wall carpeting
replaced. Well needless to say I never made that mistake again, and I always put a tablecloth down under my candles. She never re-booked a
show with me but she does buy candles from me now and again.
